Arteta handed best-case Arsenal injury scenario for PSV clash with triple boost
Mikel Arteta has been handed a welcome Arsenal injury boost in the midst of the chaotic December schedule. The Gunners have already played three games this month with another five to follow in the coming weeks as they aim to sit top on Christmas Day for the second consecutive season.
Jurrien Timber, Thomas Partey, Fabio Vieira and Emile Smith Rowe are the other players out but a major injury boost has since arrived for Arteta. Although the Gunners are back in action just three days after losing to Villa, when they travel to PSV for their final Champions League group fixture, Arteta has a rare opportunity to rest some of his star players.
Following the 6-0 win against RC Lens in their last European outing, Arsenal sealed qualification to the knockout stages and they are also guaranteed to finish top.
Therefore, while Arteta will want to win to build momentum and bounce back from the weekend, there is nothing major on the line.
That means the likes of Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and William Saliba could be given a rest ahead of the remaining festive fixtures coming in quick succession. All three not being in the starting XI is somewhat unlikely, but another 90 minutes for the trio is also equally difficult to imagine given the scenario.
In place of them, Reiss Nelson, Jorginho and Jakub Kiwior could all come in with Eddie Nketiah and Leandro Trossard also seeing their chances of a start increase. Following the clash in the Netherlands, Arsenal welcome Brighton to the Emirates Stadium on Saturday with the aim of returning to the top of the Premier League table before Liverpool face Manchester United the following day.
