Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt agree January switch to Arsenal" as both club reach a verbal agreement
Report: Arsenal coaching staff would now love to sign £68m defender compared to Virgil van Dijk
Arsenal coaching staff would love to sign Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt but a January deal for the Dutchman makes a deal very unlikely.
The Gunners have one of the top centre back pairings in the Premier League and arguably in Europe at this point.
Gabriel Magalhaes continues to impress whilst it’s difficult to pinpoint a single weakness in William Saliba’s game.
When everybody is fit, Arsenal have decent depth too with Jakub Kiwior, Ben White, Jurrien Timber and Takehiro Tomiyasu all able to play at centre back.
Timber and Tomiyasu are out though and Arsenal appear to have some centre back targets in mind if they choose to make a move in 2024…
Arsenal would love to sign Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt
The Athletic now report that Arsenal have some long-term defensive targets and Bayern Munich ace Matthijs de Ligt is one of them.
Arsenal’s coaching staff are understood to admire De Ligt and would love to bring him to North London.
Mikel Arteta’s assistant Albert Stuivenberg is Dutch and may well have an influence on this admiration.
However, the price required to lure De Ligt away from Bayern is thought to be huge given his contract situation.
De Ligt only joined Bayern in 2022, completing a huge £68million move from Juventus whilst signing a contract until 2027.
Bayern have suffered a number of defensive problems this season and surely wouldn’t let De Ligt leave any time soon.

Arsenal may continue to admire De Ligt from afar but it’s hard to imagine him heading to the Emirates Stadium in the near future.
De Ligt was simply sensational after emerging at Ajax, playing a key role in their run to the Champions League semi-finals in 2019.
Juventus came calling but the Dutchman maybe didn’t quite live up to the billing, meaning Juve were willing to let him leave last year.
Bayern scooped him up and he was immediately branded a ‘Van Dijk type’ defender by Bayern legend Lothar Matthaus.
De Ligt and Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk are Dutch international teammates and Matthaus seemingly believes that they have similar leadership qualities.
That kind of presence alongside Saliba would make Arsenal even stronger defensively but it’s hard to imagine a January or even summer deal being possible given his role at Bayern.
