Craig Burley says William Saliba and Declan Rice were Arsenal’s best players against Liverpool

Gabriel obviously scored the Arsenal goal, while Trent Alexander-Arnold was exceptional with his passing. But the likes of William Saliba and Declan Rice also deserve plenty of plaudits.

In fact, speaking to ESPN, Craig Burley picked out Saliba and Rice as the two best players on the pitch for the visitors.

“You look at the centre halves, particularly Konate when he was called upon, and I thought Saliba at the other end was absolutely terrific,” he said.

“And Declan Rice in front of him. I thought Saliba and Declan Rice were Arsenal’s two best players. And Declan Rice, as a former midfielder, I just watch him play and every time I see him, I just think he gets better and better.”

Arsenal needed their big players to come up with a big performance at Anfield. And Saliba and Rice certainly managed that.

Saliba is arguably the best defender in the Premier League right now. Meanwhile, Ian Wright felt that Rice was magnificent for Mikel Arteta’s side.

There is no doubt that Saliba has proved to be a bargain signing at £27 million. But it says everything that no-one is debating whether Arsenal spent too much to smash their club-record to sign Rice in the summer.

And if the Gunners go on and win the title, many fans are going to look at those two particular purchases as key moments in turning Arsenal into champions.
